Leave for Upgrading and Training. Teachers who would otherwise be laid off shall, upon request, be granted leave of absence of up to 2 (two) years for educational upgrading to become qualified to teach in areas for which Teachers may be required by the Board. Upon expiry of the leave the Teacher shall be given any position for which the Teacher is qualified which is held by a Teacher with less seniority; otherwise, the Teacher shall be laid off. The Teacher may apply for tuition assistance from the Board and the Union if the Teacher undertakes educational upgrading in a program leading to qualifications in an area which has been jointly designated by the Board and the Union as an area for which the Board will require additional qualified Teachers over the next two years.
