Leave Without Pay for the Long. Term Care of a Parent 35.20.1 At the discretion of the Council, an employee may be granted leave without pay for the long-term care of the employee’s parents, including step-parents or xxxxxx parents, mother-in-law or father-in-law, in accordance with the following conditions: 35.20.1.1 an employee shall notify the Council in writing as far in advance as possible but not less than four (4) weeks in advance of the commencement date of such leave, unless because of an urgent or unforeseeable circumstance, such notice cannot be given; 35.20.1.2 leave granted under this clause shall be for a minimum period of three (3) weeks; 35.20.1.3 the total leave granted under this clause shall not exceed five (5) years during an employee’s total period of employment with the National Research Council; 35.20.1.4 leave granted under this clause for a period of more than three (3) months shall be deducted from the calculation of “continuous employment” for the purposes of calculating severance pay and from the calculation of service for the purposes of calculating vacation leave; 35.20.1.5 time spent on such leave shall not be counted for pay increment purposes. 35.20.2 At the discretion of the Council, an employee who has proceeded on leave without pay under this clause, may change his return to work date.
