LEAVES OF ABSENCE AND BEREAVEMENT PAY. 16.01 The Employer shall grant leaves of absence without pay for legitimate personal reasons. It is understood that any leave of absence is subject to reasonable notice being given to such Employer. In the event such leave of absence is not used for the purpose granted, the employee may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal. 16.02 The above shall not preclude extensions for personal illness where it is established in an application prior to the expiration of the leave of absence that such request for extension is justified. 16.03 Bereavement LeaveThe immediate family in this Article shall mean “spouse” or “(step-) child”. The close extended family in this Article shall mean “(step-) parents (-in-law)”, “son/daughter-in-law”, “brother/sister-in-law”. The extended family shall mean “nieces/nephews”, “grandparents” and “grandchildren”. 16.04 An employee shall be granted the following days off work with pay in the following situations: Five (5) days in case of death of a member of the immediate family; three (3) days in case of the death of member of the close extended family; and one (1) day in the case of death of a member of the extended family.
