THE AGREEMENT ON TRADE-RELATED ASPECTS OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS (TRIPS) A.General Remarks (a)GATT, the WTO and the TRIPS Agreement The Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations held under the framework of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) was concluded on December 15, 1993. The agreement embodying the results of those negotiations, the Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organization (WTO Agreement), was adopted on April 15, 1994, in Marrakech. Those negotiations included, for the first time within the GATT, discussions on aspects of intellectual property rights which impacted on international trade. The result of those negotiations, contained in an Annex to the WTO Agreement, was the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (the TRIPS Agreement).
