Under the applicable provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974, as amended by the Computer Matching and Privacy Protection Act of 1988 (5 U.S.C. § 552a), a computer matching agreement may be effective for a period not to exceed 18 months. See 5 U.S.C. § 552a(o)(2)(C). Within 3 months prior to the expiration of the agreement, however, the Data Integrity Boards (DIB) may, without additional review, renew the computer matching agreement for a current, ongoing matching program for a period not more than one additional year, if:

Purpose Initiating Party Approval Authority Renewal Timeframe The CMA documents the terms and conditions for Computer Matching, which involves the computerized comparison of two or more automated systems of records, or of a system of records with non-Federal records. • Authorized Federal Approving Official (ex. After 18 months, the CMA may be extended once for an additional 12 months.After the extension time period, the CMA renewal restarts the initial 18 month cycle.
