Cape May Glass Co., Star Glass Works, and John S. AlstonPatent Agreement • April 18th, 2014
Contract Type FiledApril 18th, 2014When John S. Alston patented his first invention in 1900, he set in motion a mystery that has yet to be entirely explained. Alston patented two improvements to his original bottle closure and opened a plant at Pleasantville, New Jersey, to manufacture his caps. His plans, along with a proposed glass house, soon went awry, leaving researchers with a few bottles and jars and the question of who made them. Although one researcher made a tentative suggestion that the Cape May Glass Co. made the containers, our investigation suggests otherwise.

After the initial one year period, no additional jurisdictional protection can be achieved and the technology is generically available to be developed by anyone.

The Daguerreotype Patent,Patent Agreement • October 31st, 2022
Contract Type FiledOctober 31st, 2022It has often been held that Daguerre obtained a patent in England because he hoped either the British Government or the Royal Society would subsequently purchase it. Why Daguerre should single out England in this way is difficult to guess (or perhaps he really did intend to do the same in other countries), but certainly the way in which Daguerre had his discovery announced in Paris, through ‘establishment’ members of the Academy of Sciences, makes it plausible that he thought the same approach would work in England. However, such an idea by Daguerre would have been mistaken because no relationship existed between the Royal Society and the British Government, a situation unlike the highly structured, centralized and integrated patronage of science and technology in France. No definite evidence of any such intention of Daguerre or his representatives to ask the British Government to by the patent has been available.
