Iceland is a member state of the EEA, the European Economic Area; hence citizens of EU member states are authorized to come to Iceland in search of employment and to become employees of Icelandic undertakings without a special work permit1. They need, nevertheless, to apply for a residence permit with the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration at the latest when a three-month working period in Iceland is completed. Citizens of other states are not authorized to work in Iceland without work or residence permits unless the exemption provisions of law allow it.
