Common interest or community interest is a term that is frequently used in contemporary international law. Undoubtedly, there is a shift from the traditional international law concept of co-existence to cooperation. Due to a shared interest in other areas of inter-state relations and concerns, like eradication of poverty, and development, common interest has become a central focus. As a result, the international trading regime, which was integrated into the World Trade Organization, has gone beyond reciprocity to addressing issues of development in less developed countries. It is believed that common interest is addressed by two principles in the World Trade Organization—reciprocity and special and differential treatment. Common interest is also addressed in bilateral agreements, for example, the Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and countries in Africa. It is maintained that reciprocity correlates with a common interest in the context of ensuring mutual benefits to all WTO

Procurement in Nova Scotia and Trade Agreements
Trade Agreements • October 30th, 2019

Trade agreements play a vital role in our economy. They create market access for our goods and services by reducing barriers to, among other things, labour mobility, investments, energy, agriculture, and government procurement. Agreements can be comprehensive, covering a number of different topics, or more concentrated by covering individual topics. Each agreement has unique language, exemptions, rules, and requirements. Trade Agreements that impact government procurement in Nova Scotia are below.

GIs, colonised countries and trade agreements: (un)fair use versus economic interests
Trade Agreements • May 26th, 2022

Through the history, European people have left their home to colonise new pieces of land, taking with them traditions, know-how, and names related to certain products. They then started to produce a range of goods far from the homeland with the available raw materials, and in a different environment. Nevertheless, they tended (still do) to name them after the original product, which, most of the times, were/are not generic names, but geographical names recognised as GIs in the origin country. If there was a time when this situation was not an issue, the whole picture has now changed, turning it into a major concern. Among the facts that have contributed to that in the last decades, it can be pointed out: import market opening and presence of the GIs in the TRIPS agreement, stating them as important as any other IPR in the trade relations, increased personal intercontinental travelling, and the Internet. It has created a scenario where is more critical than ever to protect and preserve

⬥ The Trade in Services Agreement, or TiSA, which originated in March 2013 by the USA and Australia following failed talks during the WTO Doha Development Round. The agreement involves 23 parties (50 states), mostly members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), with the aim of facilitating economic integration for the services industry. This planned agreement is being developed with the goal of becoming multilateral, and even replacing the General Agreement on Trade in Services or GATS dating back to 1994, which lays the international framework that applies in principle to all service activities1 as governed by WTO regulation;

COPYRIGHT AND TRADE AGREEMENTS
Trade Agreements • September 29th, 2021

Trade agreements, also known as free trade agreements, are contractual agreements between two or more states under which they give each other preferential market access to each other’s goods and/or services. Depending on the number of parties involved or the geographical area covered, these can be multi-lateral, regional or bi-lateral agreements. A trade agreement will usually apply to all trade in goods and often extends to areas such as trade in services, recognition of standards, customs cooperation and the protection of intellectual property rights, including copyright. It is the inclusion of copyright in trade agreements that makes them relevant to libraries. Signatories to a trade agreement must usually alter their domestic laws in order to comply with the terms of the agreement.
