Cooperation between South Africa (SA) and the European Union (EU) was formally established through the Trade, Development and Cooperation Agreement that came into force in May 2004. In 2007, the EU_SA Strategic Partnership established a Dialogue Facility aimed at strengthening policy dialogue between SA and the EU member states. The Department of Water and Sanitation, the Water Research Commission, WaterNet together with their EU partners (French Embassy in South Africa, the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science and the French National Research Agency (ANR) operate as the Water Joint Programming Initiative (Water JPI). South Africa joined the Water JPI in 2014 for some specific activities and became a full member in November 2017. In 2020, the Water JPI and the Danish partners responded to the COVID-19 call launched by the Dialogue Facility, which was further approved for funding.
