Time-Out. A behavioral intervention in which a student, for a limited and specified time, is separated from the class within the classroom or in a non-locked setting for the purpose of self-regulating and controlling his or her own behavior. Time-Out. The first behavior issue will be addressed by giving the child a five-minute time-out to reflect on their actions.
Time-Out. If a child seems to be having difficulty with correcting inappropriate behavior, by either repeating behaviors already identified as unacceptable or refusing to acknowledge the seriousness of an infraction, staff members may utilize a “time-out”. This calls for a staff member to separate the child from the group’s activity and discuss more in depth the reason for the “time-out”. The duration of the “time-out” depends on the age of the child, nature of the presenting problem and the judgment of the staff member in charge. The child will remain under constant supervision during the “time-out” period. At the conclusion of the “time-out”, the child will be reunited back with the group and rejoin the activity. The parent will be notified of the situation by the staff member in charge. All incidents describing the situation which led to the “time-out” will be documented in the child’s file.
Time-Out. Anyone feeling unsafe with what is going on in the group is encouraged to call a halt to the group process and discuss their feelings.
