Agreement With Feminine and With Plural Nouns Sample Clauses

Agreement With Feminine and With Plural Nouns. Overall, modifiers occur with the expected ending in six out of ten cases. However, there is strong variation among the different gender/number combinations, ranging from 55% with feminine singular nouns (73/132 occurrences) to around 75% with masculine plural nouns (26/34 occurrences). I suggest that these percentages point to the fact that the speakers are to some extent aware that modifiers have to agree with the noun, and thus they have a mental representation of gender agreement; however, they are inconsistent due to production errors (cfr. the MSIH discussed in § 3). In the following subsections I discuss each gender/number combination separately; then, I illustrate two cases that are particularly problematic: when there is more than one modifier referring to the same noun, and when the modifier is DP-external. 5.2.1 Feminine Singular Nouns The agreement with feminine singular nouns produces the highest error rate. Only around 55% of the modifiers is marked with the feminine morpheme, the remaining 45% are in the default form. Consider these examples:
