ARTICLE RECOGNIZED HOLIDAYS. The following Recognized Holidays shall be granted with pay to all employees covered by this Agreement who have completed their probationary period. If an employee has been laid off on the work day immediately preceding a Recognized Holiday, or on the work day immediately after the Recognized Holiday, he shall not be disqualified receiving Recognized Holiday pay, provided he has worked at least two (2) days in the calendar week in which the Recognized Holiday falls. It is understood that the Parties hereto as well as the employees covered by this Agreement shall do everything possible to prevent absenteeism from the scheduled work days immediately before or immediately after any Recognized Holiday. Drivers Helpers, after being absent and before returning to work, must receive authorization from on day prior to their return to work. All employees shall be paid nine (9) hours pay at their appropriate rate for any Recognized Holiday to which he would be entitled under this Agreement. If an employee is required to work on a Recognized Holiday (except the day before Christmas), he shall receive pay at one and one-half his normal rate for the time actually worked, together with any Recognized Holiday pay to which he would be entitled under this Agreement. In performing the event of the latter choice the additional day off will generally be attached immediately following the vacation period. Shift employees will also have the choice of such additional allowance or of receiving an additional day off with pay in lieu of the recognized holiday. However, the latter choice may be elected only with the employee’s vacation that are not coincident with the shutdown period and that in any services on a Recognized Holiday, an area no more than one (1) additional day off and no more than one (1) employee per shift can be off because of such additional day in lieu of the recognized Shift employees who have worked those recognized holidays mentioned in Clause in the course of the normal shift schedule during the period May 1st of any year to April 30th of the following year may elect to accrue forty (40) hours in time with forty (40) hours of their regular rate of pay in lieu of receiving the eight (8)hour holiday allowance at the time the recognized holiday is worked. An employee choosing the former option must receive a minimum of fourtake the entitle- ment as if it were week. Such entitlement must be elected during the vacation selection period (normally April-May) and accrued during that vacation year to be taken in the following year’s vacation period.

ARTICLE RECOGNIZED HOLIDAYS. Should an employeeis employee be required to work during the day before Christmas an alternativeday first week of July the employee will be arranged paid for the Canada Day Holiday. Should an employee be required to work during the week immediately preceding Labour Day, the employee will be paid for the Labour Day Holiday as the case may be. An additional holiday to be known as a floating holiday is provided. This holiday will be individually agreed upon between the Employer and the employee and will be at no additional cost to the Board. It is mutually agreed that this holiday will be taken in the contract year and cannot accumulate from year to year. Whenever a holiday listed above falls on Saturday or Sunday, the preceding Friday or the following Monday will be declared a holiday. The choice of the Friday or Monday will be at the Employer’s discretion. If any other day is proclaimed as a statutory holiday by the Provincial or Federal Governments, it will be granted to employees as an additional paid holiday provided that such holiday is a school holiday. If any of the above holidays fall or are observed during an employee’s vacation, the employee will be entitled to an extra day’s pay at the employee’s regular straight time hourly rate or to an extra day’s vacation with pay at a mutually agreeable time.
