Shortage — A straight shortage occurs when you fail to receive material that has been invoiced for, but the parts did NOT appear on the Carriers Delivery Receipt (were never picked up by the carrier from the supplier) Overage — A straight overage occurs when you receive parts that you have not been invoiced for and you did not order the material.
