Energy Usage Reduction. The deployment of the copper plating process to replace the aluminum chemical vapor deposition process results in a net reduction in energy usage in the manufacturing process. The chemical deposition process requires the vaporization of the aluminum metal source to deposit the aluminum on the wafer. This requires much more power than is required to run the electrode and pumping equipment required to electroplate the copper onto the wafer. The copper plating process is projected to use 30 to 40% less energy than the aluminum vapor deposition process that it is replacing.
