The 'Estranged Students' clause defines the rights, support, or considerations given to students who are not in contact with their parents or guardians, often due to family breakdown or conflict. In practice, this clause may outline eligibility criteria for special financial aid, housing, or welfare support, and specify the documentation required to prove estrangement. Its core function is to ensure that estranged students are not disadvantaged in accessing resources or opportunities that typically require parental involvement or consent.
Estranged Students. Students who are estranged from their families may face severe financial and welfare support issues, as they may not qualify for Local Authority support and may be in greater need of a personal support network. This group of students is therefore prioritised for financial and pastoral / academic support mirroring the support for Care Leavers outlined above.

This group of students is therefore prioritised for financial support and also has a dedicated point of contact for advice and support, who works with each student to create a personalised Estranged Student plan. With 147 officially recognised estranged students in 2016/17, UCLan has the sixth highest number of estranged students across the country, so we have recently taken the Stand Alone Pledge to show our commitment to enhancing support for these students throughout their time with us. UCLan has also responded to the Equality Challenge Unit guidance on transgender students, who, alongside LGB students, represent a growing number of estranged students on campus. A range of support mechanisms has been developed across the institution with this in mind. We also work with local homelessness charities, so together we can offer support to young people who may have become estranged from their families during transition periods.

Estranged Students. As reported in Priority 1, UofG has had a comprehensive system of provision in place for care experienced applicants and students since 2007. Estranged applicants and students have always been included within this provision, including guaranteed adjusted offers of entry at our Access Thresholds via our system of contextualised admissions. We widely promote this with schools, pupils, parents, teachers and Local Authorities via our Adjusted Entry Requirements brochure, which can be accessed at: ▇▇▇▇▇://▇▇▇.▇▇▇.▇▇.▇▇/media/media_606424_en.pdf Since 2016, we have worked closely with Stand Alone to pull out and clarify this specific provision for estranged applicants and students and were one of the two Scottish universities to first sign the Stand Alone Pledge. We jointly presented a best practice session with Stand Alone at the SFC Access Conference in 2017 and we hosted Stand Alone’s first Scottish conference in 2018 to share best practice across the sector and encourage all HEIs and FECs to sign up to the Pledge. We have also liaised closely with SAAS regarding funding options for individual estranged students. We have institutional representation on the SFC steering group and will continue to work closely with all partners to equalise access to HE and FE for this particularly vulnerable group. We feel we are at the forefront of the sector in this area and have endeavoured to share best practice with other institutions.

The College currently supports five estranged students. The College has recently signed the UK Armed Forces Covenant, with a commitment to support the Armed Forces community wherever and whenever it can. The College has pledged to: • Promote itself as an Armed forces-friendly organisation. • Seek to support the employment of veterans’ young and old working with the Career Transition Partnership, in order to establish a tailored employment pathway for Service Leavers. • Have a nominated member of staff who is the College’s Veteran’s Champion. • Offer Support to local Cadet Units, either in the local community or local schools where possible. • Strive to support the employment of Service spouses and partners. • Support Veteran recruitment events. represented in our processes for self-evaluation, which in turn inform our programme, department and college planning and target-setting processes, including the development of our Outcome Agreement. There is strong student representation on our Board of Management, and representation on board committees, specifically our Learning and Student Experience Committee, which ensures that the student body is also involved in strategic discussions related to our Outcome Agreement and in its approval. The College is fully committed to engaging students in developing and improving all aspects of our provision and services and in shaping and enhancing their own learning. Our Learning Strategy 2014-18: Empowering Learners clearly sets out or commitment to increase learner ownership of and control over their own learning. We have well-developed and effective processes for recruiting and training class representatives, including the opportunity for returning students to train as “senior class representatives” and take an enhanced role in leading focus groups and training their peers. We engage our students in reflection on and planning for enhancements to learning through our comprehensive biannual Listening to Learners Focus Groups. Our class representatives engage with members of the Senior Management Team through Student Council meetings.
