Interstate agreement. The Lower Penganga project is a joint project between the states of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh on Penganga river. An understanding was reached between the states of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh on 6th October 1975 to take up Lower Penganga Project as an inter-state joint project. As per the agreement dated 7-8-1978 reached between the states of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, the state of Maharashtra can use all the waters upto Lower Penganga project site near Chikal Wardha subject to the condition that the Lower Penganga Project is taken up as a joint project. Joint meetings were held during 1978-84 to clear techno-economical issues and sharing of costs of common portion of works. Maharashtra Government prepared a Detailed Project Report for the joint project and submitted the same to Central Water Commission for clearance. The net annual 75% dependable flows at Lower Penganga dam are assessed as 42.67 TMC to be shared in the ratio of 88:12 between Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, which implies that the share of Maharashtra is 37.55 TMC and that of Andhra Pradesh is 5.12
