Research Excellence. Strathclyde’s commitment to quality and excellence in research and innovation remains core to successful achievement of our strategic mission and aims. We will continue to increase our levels of competitive public funding for research to the benefit of the wider Strathclyde ecosystem with its associated benefits for business, industry and society. Having maintained and developed our research base throughout the pandemic, Strathclyde emerges ready to accelerate our progress on major strategic initiatives including our innovation districts. Talent development is central to Strathclyde’s research strategy and the University is committed to further recruitment of talented researchers through its Chancellor’s Fellows and Global Talent Attraction Programme. Strathclyde shows its commitment to its people through a dedicated strategy and Thrive@Strathclyde wellbeing programme. We are dedicated to tackling issues of equality, diversity and inclusion through not only specific programmes, but a focus on inclusive culture and proactively addressing arising issues. We know that the Strathclyde ethos and culture helps us to attract and retain an international population despite the challenging environment. This year we will further develop our international research partnerships through our existing international strategic partners and through the creation of new regional hubs; the first of which will be established in Singapore, to support our work in the region. This extends the collaborative work that we continue to be involved in at Scottish level via the Scottish pools, two of which are chaired by our Principal. We are supportive of the process of developing a new generation of pools and are participating in ongoing work in this area. Development will continue on the Glasgow City Innovation District with plans for new buildings in our Technology and Innovation Centre advancing through the design and financing stages. New buildings will house major initiatives aimed at local benefit including SME engagement, health tech living lab and our Inspire entrepreneurship hub, as well as increasing the space available for industry to co-locate alongside cutting-edge Science and Engineering people and labs. Meanwhile our six Industry Clusters (5G, FinTech, HealthTech, Industrial Informatics, Quantum and Space) continue to bring together cross- disciplinary and multidisciplinary teams to answer the major questions facing industry and society and to combine public and private f...
Research Excellence. The University continues to demonstrate its impact as a research-intensive institution, with the results of REF 2021 evidencing improvements across all three-pillars of REF assessment – research outputs, impact and environment. Overall, 87% of the University’s research is of the highest standard, having an outstanding or very considerable impact on society. Our research environment – incorporating strategy, culture, facilities and interdisciplinary collaboration also improved with a score of 85%. These excellent results have placed the University joint 4th in Scotland and joint 43rd in the UK for research impact (THE REF 2021 rankings).
Research Excellence. The University returned excellent scores from the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 assessment: 68% of our research activity was assessed as “internationally excellent” and “world learning” and Edinburgh ▇▇▇▇▇▇ was the top ranking Scottish modern institution for research power and impact. Our growth in research has been marked, we submitted 251 staff to this year’s REF, significantly up from 99 in 2014, and our Research Power increased from 250 to 718, mirroring growth in volume and quality of research undertaken. We submitted research in 13 units of assessment (UoAs) and we improved in every single one which we had submitted to previously, while we also entered four new Units of Assessment. Our growing research profile was reflected in The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, the only global performance tables that judge universities across all their core criteria, has placed ENU in the 401-500 band which marks an improvement from 501-600 last year and 801-1000 in 2020. Aligned to our academic themes of wellbeing and sustainability, we established six new research centres: Cardiovascular Health; Mental Health Practice, Policy and Law Research; Military Research, Education & Public Engagement; Child & Family Law and Policy; Transport Research Innovation; and Tourism Research. The research centres will strengthen the university’s visibility around particular research areas, both within the UK and internationally and we are exploring opportunities for joint supervision, staff exchanges and joint research bids. We continue to implement our Researcher Concordat Action plan, raising awareness of support for Mental Health and Wellbeing for researchers, benchmarking of current contractual situations for researchers, and increased provision of career planning support for contract researchers. We are developing our future action plan for the next three years (2023-2025) which will be submitted to Vitae in January 2023 for external review. We have formally launched our Early Career Academic Development programme. The programme is a tailored development plan for new academic staff and consists of supportive actions and learning interventions over a two year period. All new staff in this programme will receive a reduced teaching workload to allow a focus on activities relating to research, and scholarly activities.
