Settlement risk (also known as credit risk or counterparty risk) is the risk of loss caused by borrowers or counterparties failing to fulfil their obligations or the risk of such parties' credit quality deteriorating. Settlement risk increases where different legs of a transaction settle in different time zones or in different settlement systems where netting is not possible.
