Single Life or Joint Life Basis. The election request will specify whether GAWA payments will be taken on a Single Life or Joint Life Basis. The Joint Life basis is only available if you are married to a Spouse at the time of the election. If no election is made, GAWA payments will be taken on a Single Life Basis. GAWA payments taken on a Single Life Basis will be greater than those taken on a Joint Life Basis. Once the election to take GAWA payments is or has been made (either under a Prior Contract or this Contract), you may not change the Single Life Basis or Joint Life Basis.

Single Life or Joint Life Basis. At the time the election to take GAWA payments is made, the Employer or Employer’s Designee will report to us on behalf of the Participant if GAWA payments will be made on a Single Life or Joint Life basis. The Joint Life basis is only available if the Participant is married to a spouse at the time of the election. Once the election to take GAWA payments is made, there can be no change to the Single Life or Joint Life basis.

  • Qualified Joint and Survivor Annuity Unless an optional form of benefit is selected pursuant to a qualified election within the 90-day period ending on the annuity starting date, a married Participant's Vested account balance will be paid in the form of a qualified joint and survivor annuity and an unmarried Participant's Vested account balance will be paid in the form of a life annuity. The Participant may elect to have such annuity distributed upon attainment of the earliest retirement age under the Plan.

However, if the Annuitant has a Spouse on the date payments under the life annuity begin, the life annuity must be established for the lives jointly of the Annuitant and the Annuitant’s Spouse, unless the Spouse has provided a waiver in the form and manner required by Pension Legislation. Where the surviving Spouse is entitled to payments under the life annuity after the Annuitant’s death, those payments must be at least 60 percent of the amount to which the Annuitant was entitled prior to the Annuitant’s death. The life annuity may not differentiate based on gender except to the extent permitted by Pension Legislation.
