Storage Unit. A cylindrical stainless-steel tank is designed and fabricated to contain PCM and house the heat exchanger coils. Cylindrical type tank was designed in Solid Edge and later procured from (Nordic Heater, 2019). The blueprint, the CAD model and the final vessel are shown in Figure 3-7 and Figure 3-8a. Storage Unit. The TES unit to be installed at IREN site has undergone investigations. Above all, a complete review of what was evaluated by Clauger before its exit from consortium in terms of technical and economic aspects that involve the overall performance of the system, the safety and reliability (keeping the lowest risk of failure) coming from IREN production site (as a highly sensitive power plant) and the total costs of production to meet all these requirements. Building a research level thermal storage tank complemented with all the auxiliary devices to guarantee a perfect integration with Mayekawa heat pump at the IREN plant requires a larger budget than the initially estimate. For this reason, the attention was shifted towards commercially available products. With the site specific requirements, mainly on the pipeline pressure, some major engineering upgrades are done. In order to keep within the budget constraint, storage capacity was proposed with a reduction from 600 to 300 kWh. This modification reduces the time of engineering procurement and construction (EPC), while still enables delivery of the final results with significance on the scientific results. The 300 kwh is suitable for the demonstration plant. As a first option, a potential thermal storage of four SUNAMP heat battery, 90 kWh each has been considered. The device contained a packed fins (copper+aluminium) heat exchanger inserted in a polypropylene box that contains 1’400 kg of PCM SU58. The heat battery is shown in Figure 4-5. Figure 4-5 Sunamp Internal Box (left) and External Unit (right). Sunamp supplies its thermal storage systems mainly for civil application with low water pressure requirements. The most critical constraint coming from the demosite is the maximum working temperature and pressure, respectively of 110°C and 35 bar (compliant with PED directive). This however entails a major upgrade on the Sunamp product with redesign of the heat exchanger and a consequent review of the overall behaviour of the TES that has been investigated. As anticipated, the final design fails to satisfy the overall technical specifications required. The alternative, also pushed by the COVID19 pandemic constraints, was to design a new, in-house heat battery with a maximum storage of 300 kWh. This also allowed the opportunity to study the behaviour of a similar PCM storage with a different design (shell & tube) and a bio-based PCM. The new design is numerically examined in a collaborative study of i-TES, Ar...
