Success Stories. Among the many individual benefits and successes that have occurred because of the MSU-Malawi partnership, three stories are highlighted in this report (refer to Appendix B for detailed stories):
1. Impacting the Success of Disadvantaged Women Undergraduate Students in Malawi: Tenacity Rewarded. The story of Stiveria Ndala represents the challenges that disadvantaged women experience in their academic life in Malawi, as well as the successes that can be achieved with a small amount of support. Stiveria Ndala joined Bunda College of Agriculture to pursue a Diploma/Degree program in Agriculture in the 1990s. Struggling to complete her studies and support herself, she left the university after three years of study and went out to seek employment. While working at an NGO, Xxxxxxxx became a mother and took on the responsibility of being a bread winner for her family. In 2010, Stiveria again applied to a Degree Program at Bunda College of Agriculture to continue her education. The scholarship that she and other women received through the USAID-funded Agro-Ecosystem Services University Capacity Building project had a considerable impact on her life in terms of professional and personal success.
2. New avenues to the future through a scholarship program: Xxxxxx’s Story. Xxxxxxxx Xxxxxx’s story is an example of how a relatively small amount of support for a motivated and bright student can have a big impact. Most often, issues of family and finances play a major role in women’s decisions to drop out. Xxxxxxxx was on the verge of leaving the university, but she received a scholarship and was able to complete her program and graduate. She had goals of using her degree to contribute to agro-ecosystem related education in Malawi. With this scholarship, Xxxxxxxx was able to stay in school, complete her degree, and gain new avenues to future employment.
Success Stories. Girls in technology Girls in technology is not a common scene to see in Photo: ECYP Xxxxx Xxxx Xxxxxxxx When I was a little girl I liked the idea of building robots or things like this, but now that I know how to do it, I like it even more. Now I know what I am going to become in the near future. I want to go to college and study Industrial Engineering our schools. Boys will always be inclined to do activities related to innovation, math, and technology. It is the same perception people have about girls and math: “They are not as good as boys. Girls have more language skills than math skills.” Xxxxx Xxxxxx from Xxxxx Xxxxxxxxxx School in San Xxxx Xxxxx has proved them wrong. She is the middle child of Xxxxxxx Xxxxxx and Xxxxxx Xxxxxxxxx. With a younger brother that looks up to her as her role model and an older sister that is very proud of her little sister, Xxxxx has been able to be the exception to the rule. Her professor came to her three months ago with an amazing opportunity. The Education for Children and Youth Project assigned him the mission to teach basic principles of robotics and video games. His first move was to make a team with the best students he has in his computer science class. Xxxxx, at her 14 years old, is in the top 5 of his class and made it to the robotics team. She never thought she had the ability to learn about programming or even construction. Recently, the school competed in a national robotics competition. Xxxxx was one of the students that help with the programming of a robot that would read with a sensor a rubrix cube. The 3D combination puzzle is solved in seconds by the robot, thanks to the programming Xxxxx did with her team. “This is a complete team effort. All we had was the intention to do something innovative, our professor´s support and internet access. We did a lot of tries. The structure was very complicated. We had to assemble and take to pieces several times until we got it right.

To better illustrate to successes of the PFS Program, EWMI employed a “case study” approach to highlight the challenges encountered, the PFS initiatives taken to address the challenges, and the results of these initiatives. While there were many successes resulting from PFS Program activities, we are highlighting below only a couple successes from each of the three regions covered by the PFS mandate. These and additional success stories are enclosed in a one-page format as an Annex to this report.
