Testing and Remediation. All students enrolled in the De Anza College nursing program will take assigned nationally normed HESI specialty exams in most courses and an Exit Exam in the final quarter of the program. Students should aim to achieve a score of 900 or higher on each exam. Research demonstrates that scores in this range on the HESI Exit Exam are highly predictive of NCLEX success. To prepare for the comprehensive Exit Exam, students are required to remediate after each course exam according to the prescribed plan of study that accompanies the HESI feedback. Purpose: The purpose of the remediation is to improve student’s critical thinking, reasoning skills, and test taking strategies to achieve NCLEX success. Following each HESI course and Exit Exam, students are required to remediate, and the remediation requirements are dependent on the individual student’s HESI score. HESI exam scores can be indicative of the student’s level of risk for success in the program and on NCLEX. Students with lower HESI scores require more intense remediation. Procedure: Students will receive their HESI Exam reports and correlating online remediation within 48 hours of the exam being closed. From their HESI Exam student report, students will develop their personal plan for remediation from the guidelines. If students do not receive their remediation results, they should contact Elsevier/HESI for assistance. Specialty examinations: Exams are administered in various nursing courses. Prior to taking a specialty exam, students will complete practice NCLEX questions and case studies in the specialty area and review provided rationale to assist in preparing for the exam. Following exam administration, students receive a score and an online remediation plan for each question missed. Remediation for each question has multiple content items and may include practice questions. All students must remediate according to the guidelines. HESI Exit examination: The HESI Exit examination will be administered twice during the final quarter of the program. An online remediation plan is developed for each question missed. . All students must remediate according to the guidelines. The scores of the two HESI Exit examinations will both be utilized as part of the final course grade per course greensheet. Students should aim for a 900 or higher benchmark score on the HESI exam before sitting for the NCLEX examination. HESI Exam Points: Please see individual course greensheets for specific grading details. Minimum Remediation Guidelines: Online remediation is provided in the HESI Student Access specific to the exam. • HESI Score > 900: Complete a minimum of 1 hour of remediation • HESI Score 800-900: Complete a minimum of 3 hours of remediation • HESI Score 700-799: Complete a minimum of 4 hours of remediation • HESI Score 600-699: Complete a minimum of 5 hours of remediation • HESI Score 599 or below: Complete a minimum of 6 hours of remediation Students must be logged into their HESI Student Access account and the online test specific remediation content for the number of hours specified. Do not print and log out of HESI remediation to study. Time spent on remediation content is monitored and students can break up the required remediation hours into multiple sessions. Proof of remediation must be submitted to the Director of the program by the end of Week 1 of the following rotation.
