To meet the above requirements as set by EPA and OSHA, the following ASTM standards apply: The following procedure shall be used for all parts scheduled to receive powder coating: All parts must be cleaned, free of grease, oil, and dirt. and if specifically recommended by powder manufacturer, shot blasting, chemical etching or other preparation may be required. The powder and the part must receive electrostatically opposite charges so that all exposed surfaces are fully and thoroughly covered. The thickness of the coating is directly controlled by the intensity of the induced electrostatic charge. The thickness of the coating will increased as the voltage is increased. The part shall be backed at the temperature recommended by the powder manufacturer. Backing time shall be a function of the mass of the part, and the time it takes the part to reach the recommended temperature. As a test for determining if the powder has cured properly after backing, a small amount of Methyl Ethyl Keytone (MEK) shall be poured onto a clean rag, and the rag shall be rubbed vigorously against a randomly selected part. The rag shall show no trace of the coating. The pole shall be painted to height of seven (7) feet.
