To Understand When a Permit is Required. The Long Beach SMP addresses a range of uses and development that may occur in the shoreline area. The SMP ensures the shoreline area is protected from activities and uses that, if unmonitored, could cause damage to the functions and values of the shoreline, or degrade the aesthetic values of the shoreline that Long Beach enjoys. Some uses/development may be required to obtain an SSDP, a Shoreline CUP, a Shoreline Variance, or a Letter of Exemption. While some uses may be exempt from permitting requirements, all must comply with the policies and regulations established by the state’s SMA as expressed through this SMP.
