When Moses splashed blood of sacrificed animals on the altar and then on the people, he was sealing a covenant between them and God. And just like any other sacred agreement, something was required of both parties. For his part, God was promising to bless the Israelites and take them as his own “treasured possession” (Exodus 19:5). For their part, the people were promising to worship him and obey his commandments (24:7).
