For the past ten years, Brevard’s teachers have had opportunities to take online courses through the Blackboard Learning System. Utilizing Blackboard’s virtualized platform, the Office of Professional Development offers 60-hour “add-on” certification courses in ESOL, Reading, Gifted, and Athletic Coaching throughout the school year. During the 2010-2011 school year, over 45 add-on certification courses were delivered to teachers; almost half of those were available in an online format. Additional online add-on endorsement courses are currently being developed and added to the course menu. Credits earned through online coursework are not only useful to teachers as they renew their teaching certificates, but are also helpful in meeting “out-of-field” training requirements required by state law. The Blackboard Online Learning System is critical to the delivery of the add-on certification endorsement program.
