FiledJuly 1st, 2010There are many potential ecological and socioeconomic benefits and threats associated with a delayed drawdown of the swamp timothy managed wetlands of the Grassland Ecological Area to the San Joaquin River Basin as a whole. In an effort to aid in the San Joaquin River Restoration, through the improvement of in-stream wildlife habitat and the protection of beneficial uses, a paired hydrologic/biologic study was conducted to ascertain the effects of a delayed drawdown of managed wetlands to match peak assimilative capacity in the San Joaquin River. Specifically, this study has quantified the effects of a delayed drawdown on avian usage, water quality, and the wetland’s ability to produce seed and biomass needed to support the energetic needs of local and migratory waterbirds. The effects of a delayed drawdown (treatment) were determined to negatively affect both biomass and seed mass productivity of swamp timothy. Although avian species richness, primarily due to an increase in use by sh
