The Arctic as a Geopolitical Bond among the European Union, Norway & RussiaGeopolitical Analysis • November 2nd, 2016
Contract Type FiledNovember 2nd, 2016The purpose of this article is to examine the emerging geopolitics of the “European” Arctic as demonstrated through energy, environment and migration. The Arctic environment is harsh and unique compared to the rest of the European continent. However, in the last decade, the decrease in sea ice and the development of new technologies have enhanced human accessibility to the living and non-living resources of the Arctic. Moreover, new navigation routes, the Northwest Passage and the Northern Sea Route, are coming forth. Despite the fact that the Arctic is considered one of the most unspoiled and untouched regions on Earth, it is facing increasing risks both from climate change and human activities. It is time to put aside the reluctance1 to use geopolitical analysis on contemporary issues, as once again geopolitics could help to foresee and address upcoming adverse developments before they escalate.
