Contract Type FiledJuly 15th, 2019Adopted in Escazú, Costa Rica, on 4 March 2018, the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean has as its objective to guarantee the full and effective implementation of access rights. This is the first regional legally binding environmental agreement that seeks directly to combat inequality and discrimination by devoting specific and particular attention to persons and groups in vulnerable situations including mechanisms for the protection of environmental defenders. 16 countries from the region have already signed the agreement and one has ratified. This session will explore how the ratification and implementation of the Escazú agreement holds a promise to allow fulfillment of SDG 10, 13 and 16, combating inequality and building sustainable, peaceful and inclusive and resilient societies.
