A WTO panel found last year that the US Copyright Act does not respect the provisions of the Trade in Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) agreement as it exempts most bars, restaurants and retail shops from the obligation to pay royalty fees for the music they play (“business exemption”). The US are under the obligation to amend the Act in order to respect the rights of musicians.
