The Paris Agreement*1, an international framework for global warming countermeasures from 2020 onward, set the goal of “holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.” The Agreement entered into force in November 2016. To achieve the 2°C target, and preferably to limit the increase to 1.5°C, the Agreement also indicated the goal of achieving a balance between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and absorption in the second half of this century, establishing the need to shift to a decarbonized society after 2050.
