Management and stewardship of the nation's lands and waters requires skillful public service supported by sound science. To help meet these needs, a network of Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Units (CESUs) is being established. CESUs provide research, technical assistance and education to federal land management, environmental and research agencies and their potential partners. CESUs are organized around biogeographic areas. Their broad scope includes the biological, physical, and cultural sciences needed to address critical natural and cultural resource management and stewardship issues. Each CESU includes several federal agencies, a host university, partner universities and other institutions.
