Contract Type FiledOctober 22nd, 2013Contract of Affreightment: A contract for the carriage of goods by sea is called as a "contract of affreightment". The word 'affreightment' literally means 'the hiring of a vessel or ship". It may, thus, be defined as a contract between the consignor or shipper and the shipping company whereby the former agrees to hire, at a price called 'freight', space in a ship for transportation of goods. A contract of affreightment may be embodied either in a Charter Party or a Bill of Lading.
