In July 1984 France and Germany signed an agreement in Saarbrucken to lift border controls. In October 1984 Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands joined this Agreement. These five original “Schengen” member states then signed this first Schengen Agreement in June 1985. It is now described as an “Accord” and is the forerunner to the main Agreement (Document no 57).
