The seven States of the alpine range and the European Union have made an agreement for the protection of the Alps in 1991. So-called protocols were worked out for different fields of activity. The convention aims at improving the protection of natural resources and setting obligatory limits for a non-polluting development in the Alps. The parties to the contract agreed upon realization of united research work, scientific valuations and programs for the observation of the current development. Numerous necessary research works and analysis are intended in the different protocols. An observation-system should be built up for the Alps. It will produce substantial impulses for a frontier crossing research work in the Alps and improve their coordination.
