As part of its mission to prevent injury, illness, and deaths caused by hazards in the workplace, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) established surveillance programs which have helped to enumerate the extent of occupational hazards in the United States. These surveillance programs have also identified many problems that require additional research and prevention efforts.
