Area of Responsibility: School Performance: Academy trusts and maintained school governing bodies are responsible for school performance and will be inspected by Ofsted. However the Local Authority is responsible at a strategic level for the performance of all providers, including academies and free schools, in its area and is inspected by Ofsted in relation to this function. The Local Authority has powers to intervene in maintained schools to provide additional support or by issuing a warning notice but must raise concerns about academies through the Department for Education/ their Regional Schools Commissioner. Local Authority Governing Bodies of Maintained Schools Academy Trusts Local Authorities have a statutory duty as set out in section 13a of the 1996 Education Act “to promote high standards and fulfilment of potential in maintained schools and other education and training providers, so that all children and young people benefit from a good education.” As indicated above, the
