FiledJuly 31st, 2015The Karaim marriage contract, ketubba or šeṭar in Hebrew, dealt with in this article is treasured in the First Firkovich Collection of the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg where it carries the call number Ketubba Evr. I K 7. The contract is dedicated to the engagement of Joseph b. Jeshu‘ah to Sarah b. Isaac in Gözleve, the Eupatoria of today, in the Crimea, on Friday, Elul 27, 5603 which corresponds to the 22nd of September, 1843. The size of the ketubba leaf measures 79×55.5 cm and the size of the textual surface is 63×46 cm. The document is decorated with beautiful fronds in green, yellow and orange on the textual margins and silver in the central medallion.
