The Great Barrier Reef Intergovernmental Agreement 2009 was established to provide a contemporary framework for cooperation between the governments, recognising challenges that were not foreseen at the time of the 1979 Agreement. With the development of the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan (Reef 2050 Plan), the Commonwealth and Queensland governments agreed on a vision for the future and renewed their commitment to protecting the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area including its Outstanding Universal Value.
