Protein kinase B (PKB/AKT) is an essential factor in the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)-PKB signaling pathway. This pathway is altered in many human cancers, to inlcude breast, colorectal, ovarian1 and prostate cancers2, and aberrant activation of the PI3K-PKB pathway promotes cell growth and survival, invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis in these tumors. PKB/AKT also plays an important role in diabetes3 and intracellular bacterial infections4, underscoring its relevance as a target for clinical drug development.
