The Federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) privacy regulations govern the use and dissemination of information found on patients’ medical records and all other identifiable health information. In effort to maintain compliance with current HIPAA regulations, the American College of Surgeons requires session participants to remove all protected health information (PHI) from all written, visual, and verbal presentation materials. PHI includes patient names, locations, biometric identifiers, full or partial facial photographs, and any other unique identifying number, characteristic or code.
