State law (AB/SB 130), which took effect during the 2021-22 school year, made changes to the Independent Study Education Code by creating new grade-level requirements for live interaction with students, synchronous instruction, and other components. In the Governor’s January 2022 Proposal, the mandate is not renewed for 2022-23, however if an LEA offers Independent Study, rules from the 21-22 state law remain in place.
