Coeliac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease that occurs in genetically predisposed people. In Europe 1 in 100 people are affected, but only a small percentage of these (~12%) have been diagnosed. In an autoimmune disease the body produces antibodies that attack its own tissue, in coeliac disease this is triggered by eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley and ingredients derived from these cereals. Undiagnosed CD has a very high impact on the person affected and their families as well as a significant economic cost, both in terms of healthcare provision and lost potential. Studies have shown that it takes on average 11 years for a person to be diagnosed with CD. They are often incorrectly treated for other illness as symptoms are not always specific. There are no drug treatments available, however observing a gluten free diet can reverse the symptoms
