In what ways do these seven Indo-Persian treatises on Hindustani music, and others like them written after 1660, constitute a “tradition” with a shared epistemology? I have argued that there were two branches of Indo-Persian musical writing at this time, one which openly drew its inspiration from Sanskrit precedent, and a collection of one-off works unique in their content that reflected Sanskrit traditions obliquely if at all.
