On November 1, 2000, the “Safe Harbor” agreement between the European Union and the United States entered into effect. The agreement, which was ratified by the United States and the EU last summer, establishes a series of Safe Harbor Principles that will facilitate transfers of personal data from EU Member States to the United States that might otherwise violate provisions of the EU Directive on Data Protection. A U.S. organization that certifies compliance with the Safe Harbor Principles must voluntarily agree to a series of privacy protections in the United States for personal data received from the EU.
