• As a result of amendments to the Insurance Corporation Act passed in 2003, the Government will no longer approve the rates set by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC). Effective, January 2004, basic automobile insurance rates will be set by the British Columbia Utilities Commission. The Commission also has jurisdiction to approve the costs that are recouped through those rates. ICBC’s optional automobile insurance business will be subject to substantially the same financial and regulatory requirements as private insurers.
