During the last 40 years population-based Cancer Registries (CRs) have contributed data to Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, and to other collaborative European projects such as EUROCARE (Survival of cancer patients in Europe http://www.eurocare.it/). This collaboration has contributed to set common criteria and rules to improve the quality and comparability of data among CRs. However, when data are used for specific purposes, such as for studying tumours with uncommon morphology types, a more careful validation is established. For new studies it is not uncommon to highlight residual problems in data quality and standardisation.
