Because jail areas contain inmates who have been charged with or convicted of misdemeanors and felonies, and may have some form of mental illness or be under the influence of an intoxicant, there are personal safety and security risks associated with being in a jail facility or vehicle. In choosing to accompany a jail deputy during the performance of his or her jail duties, you assume those risks. The risks include, but are not limited to physical or sexual assault; harassment; threats; exposure to biohazards, fire, gas, explosions, discharged lethal and nonlethal weapons, and chemical agents such as pepper spray; and the possibility of being taken hostage or of being killed. You must understand that being with a staff member will not eliminate the inherent risks of being inside the jail facility or vehicle.
