Indonesia has a rich diversity of local varieties of crops, but the Indonesian people have not been able to enjoy maximum economic benefits from the use of biological resources, especially local crop varieties. The Benefit Sharing Agreement has the meaning of a collective agreement on the sharing of economic benefits as compensation to local communities for the commercialization of local crop varieties by others. Benefit sharing is expected to improve the welfare of local communities in Indonesia. Local communities are given the right to manage, utilize and preserve local varieties of crops.
