What, if any, relevance does the Moon Agreement have to activities in space today?
Moon Agreement • September 24th, 2021

The “Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies” was adopted by consensus by the UN General Assembly in its Resolution 34/68 of 5 December 1979, opened for signature on 18 December 1979 and entered into force on 11 July 1984.1 As of today (2021) it has only 18 state parties and four more signatories.2 In contrast to the other four UN treaties on outer space3 none of the important space faring nations, such as the United States, Russia, China, Japan, or India, has ratified the Moon Agreement. Therefore, it is certainly an interesting question, what, if any, relevance this treaty has to activities in outer space today.
